For most standard garage door installations, the work is usually completed within half a day, often in two to four hours. In many cases, this means your new garage door can be supplied, fitted and made fully operational (with on-site demonstrations) on the same day.
That said, the exact time will depend on a few key factors…
The type of garage door being installed
Different garage doors involve different fitting processes which will impact the timeline for installation.
- Up and over garage doors are typically the quickest to install as the opening and fixings are the most straightforward to fit and operate, as well as repair if needed in the future.
- Roller garage doors usually take a little longer due to the fitting of additional fixings such as guide rails, roller boxes and electrical components.
- Sectional garage doors often require more precise alignment and additional framework, which can add to the overall time.
- Side hinged garage doors can vary depending on whether any structural preparation is needed.
It’s also worth noting that a simple replacement like for like (i.e. roller door for roller door) will always be quicker than changing to a different door type.
Whether it is a replacement or a brand new opening
As mentioned, replacing an existing garage door using the same opening and the same reveal option is generally faster, as the structure is already in place. If the opening needs adjusting or preparing to suit a new door style, this will extend the installation time slightly.
This will all be discussed ahead of installation during your free site visit.
Electric and automated features
If you would like an electric garage door to enable hands-free, automated opening, extra time will be needed to install the motor, safety features, controls and more. This is usually factored into the installation schedule and rarely adds more than an hour or two.
Condition of the garage opening
The actual opening where your garage is electrically operated will need to be in a condition ready to support the removal and installation of a new door. If the existing brickwork or frame, or even the floor level, needs attention then the installation may take longer. Any issues here are normally identified during a site visit so there are no surprises on the day.
What to expect on the day
On the day of your garage door installation, our contractors will typically:
- Remove the old garage door and dispose of it safely
- Prepare and check the opening
- Install the new door and any automation
- Test the operation and safety features
- Talk you through how everything works
- Clean the site to remove any debris or rubbish
If you are having multiple doors fitted or additional work carried out, the installation may take longer but this will always be explained in advance.
If you would like a more accurate timescale for your specific garage and door type, a site visit is always the best way to get a clear answer. Arrange yours today by filling out a form online or giving us a call now.
